OISS Seeking Student Employees for Fall 2009-Spring 2010 for New Peer Assistant Program
The Office of International Students and Scholars is creating a new corps of students, called Peer Assistants (PA’s) to help with the adjustment process for new international undergraduate students. These peers will serve as a direct link between OISS advisors and the new students to help us better promote safe and healthy new first-year students, intervene more quickly if problems do arise, and help us improve the adjustment process and retention rate for these students. The nature of the Peer Assistant (PA) positions combine serving as peer counselors/mentors with extending the ongoing orientation efforts of OISS.

We plan to hire up to 8 Peer Assistants and 1 Lead Peer Assistant to work with us throughout the Fall 2009-Spring 2010 semesters. The number of hours per week will vary between 3-8 per Peer Assistant. At this point in time, final hiring is contingent upon the Office of International Students and Scholars receiving funding to support the new program. We will not learn if this funding is approved until the Board of Regents meeting in June 2009. However, we need to proceed with the hiring process now. Any hires will be contingent on funding confirmation in June 2009.

Qualifications for Peer Assistant/Lead Peer Assistant Positions:
*University of Iowa Junior (3rd year), Senior (4th year), or Graduate Student beyond 1st year as of Fall 2009
*Both international and U.S. applicants are encouraged to apply
*Experience in a cross-cultural setting is required; leadership experience highly desirable
*Applicants must be able to attend individual and group interviews on April 13 or 14
*Those applicants who are hired to be Peer Assistants must attend Peer Assistant training on August 8
*Peer Assistants must be available to take part in the orientation for new international students during the week of August 17-21
*Peer Assistants must be available to work 3-8 hours/week during August, September, October, November, January, February, March, and April. No work will be required in December/May

Paid tutors are needed for the Spring ’09 semester
Do you speak Arabic, Modern Standard, German, Romanian or Tamil?

Speakers of less commonly taught languages are sought as tutors for a language service available to the UI students, faculty and staff. This service, entitled the Autonomous Language Learning Network program (ALLNet), matches paid tutors in various languages NOT currently taught at The University of Iowa with UI students, faculty and staff wishing to learn those languages for study or research abroad.
ALLNet invites speakers of foreign languages to join the program and tutor a learner in their native language. Each tutor meets with a student twice a week to give the learner an important opportunity to practice speaking the language with a native speaker before going abroad. No prior tutoring experience is required. Tutors will be trained by ALLNet staff, and will be reimbursed for their services up to three hours a week.
